Meet Doctor Karen Parvin

I decided to become a dentist because I enjoy science, but I didn't want to work in a lab. I like working with my hands, I like art, I like doing art projects, and dentistry it's really cool in that it integrates parts of engineering, art, science, working with people, helping people, so it's a lot of different things that I really love. The most rewarding part of what I do is being able to change lives.

People don't always think about the fact that a dentist can change lives, they think that all we do is fix teeth, but fixing teeth can really impact someone's overall health, you know, they can impact their appearance significantly, changing someone's appearance can change their confidence, it changes how they see themselves, and then we also of can help people's function and help them eat better, chew better, I mean it's rewarding when you have somebody who's been in pain for years, maybe hasn't, has avoided interacting with people because of how they look, and then they're able to go out and eat with their family, they're able to smile in family portraits and get back into life, which is really awesome.

Meet Dr. Karen Parvin, a Dentist Who Puts Your Smile First

The part of dentistry Dr. Karen Parvin loves most is the people.

She loves getting to know her patients and having the opportunity to make a real difference in their lives. Sometimes that means helping someone get healthy again or eat comfortably. Sometimes it's helping a patient who has spent years dealing with worn or failing teeth. And sometimes it's giving someone a smile they finally feel good about.

That's what has kept dentistry rewarding for her over the years.

Dr. Parvin especially enjoys restorative and esthetic dentistry, including more complex cases. She likes figuring out why something is happening, looking at the whole picture, and developing a plan that makes sense for that particular patient. She doesn't believe that more dentistry is always better. Sometimes the best plan actually means doing less.

Education, Training & Service

Dr. Parvin earned her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Vanderbilt University and her dental degree from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.

After dental school, she served as a dentist in the United States Navy and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency. Her husband is also a Navy veteran, so the military community has been an important part of their lives.

Dr. Parvin is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (D.ABDSM). She has spent hundreds of hours in advanced education throughout her career, with extensive training in cosmetic, restorative and reconstructive dentistry, occlusion, and dental sleep medicine. Her training has also included advanced coursework through The Dawson Academy.

She continues to take courses because she loves learning, but also because she wants to provide the highest level of care. When she learns something that can improve the way she diagnoses, plans, or treats a case, she brings that knowledge back to her patients.

How She Approaches Dentistry

Dr. Parvin doesn't look at a tooth without considering the rest of the person. Depending on the situation, that may mean looking at the bite, gums and bone, jaw joints and muscles, airway, habits, and patterns of wear. She determines why a problem developed in the first place.

She also tries to preserve healthy tooth structure whenever it makes sense. Sometimes orthodontics before restorative treatment means far less tooth structure needs to be removed. Sometimes a veneer makes more sense than a crown. Sometimes a healthy tooth should simply be left alone. And when more extensive treatment really is needed, she wants to understand why and plan it carefully.

Complex cases are planned well before the final restorations are made. Dr. Parvin may use digital design, models, trial smiles, and temporary restorations to work through the plan and make any needed changes along the way.

"We don't just hope you're going to like the final result. We build opportunities into the process to evaluate and refine it before we get there."

She takes the same approach to esthetics. Dr. Parvin wants restored teeth to look like they belong. A beautiful result shouldn't look like the same smile was placed on every patient. It should look natural on that person.

Outside the Office

Away from dentistry, Dr. Parvin enjoys spending time with her husband and their two college-age children. With both kids away at school, she especially enjoys opportunities to visit them and spend time together.

She loves being outdoors, whether she's at the beach, exploring a national park, or spending time with her dogs. She's a college football fan and has recently started learning mahjong.

For Dr. Parvin, dentistry has always been about more than teeth. She loves the relationships she develops with her patients and the fact that the work she does can genuinely change someone's life for the better.

I am happy to leave a positive review. I have been to several dentist locally in the Chesapeake and Virginia Beach area, as I have lived here all my life. A switch in insurance required me to look for a new dentist. At 57, my dental needs are changing, and I am so pleased I found Coastal Smile. They are very personable, and like to get to know you on a first name basis, which I appreciate. With the other dentists I had been too, I either felt like I was being processed, or was an opportunity to upsell "optional" improvements. In positive contrast, Dr. Parvin and her staff greet me by first name each time I arrive. Are quick to get me in. Ask enough questions and listen to any of my questions and take the time to sit down and offer a range of options, explaining pros and cons of each. I have not felt pressured, but rather educated to make a better decision for me, within my timeline and my budget. Thanks Coastal Smile Design for a continuing great and personalized experience!

So I happened upon Coastal Smile while I was working. I was greeted by a very nice gentleman that took time from his busy day to listen to what I was there for as I was noticing there was something very different from any other dental office that I’ve been in. Every staff member that noticed me smiled at me and acknowledged I was there. I had been dealing with a painful tooth for quite awhile without luck in getting in anywhere. So I asked if they were taking new patients and they were. So today was my appointment…BEST dental experience I’ve EVER had. They made me feel at ease, pain free, cared for and educated. My appointment was even a bit of learning and my tech nerd thought at one point I thought it would be an amazing place to work. Great people, amazing Dr and cool tech. Get an appointment! You will not regret it Oh and I received a call to check on me!

Dr Parvin is a wonderful dentist, she's very warm and friendly, and always listens to any concern we have. While my son was in collage, on a Saturday night, while at a party, he had one of his front teeth knock out. Actually is was broken in half. I called the after hours number and spoke to Dr Parvin and she had him come to her office on a Sunday and fixed his tooth, He didn't miss a day of college. She is truly a wonderful dentist and shows that she cares about her patients.

I had a new patient appointment today at Coastal Smile Design. The office staff was very helpful and friendly. It was a wonderful first impression. The office was nice and clean. I was extremely impressed with the attention to detail in examining and charting my teeth by the hygienist. She explained everything she was doing and why. I was also impressed watching her clean and sanitize the equipment immediately after she finished with me. I really enjoyed meeting and talking with Dr. Karen Parvin. We discussed my treatment plan and she did not pressure me in any way on how or when to proceed. She was very reassuring. She did a very thorough examination of my teeth and also checked the tightness along my jawline and head for TMJ, explaining everything as she was examining me. I am usually very stressed at a dentist office but each step in the appointment was very relaxing. Great experience!!
